UNL Computer & Electronics Engineering

College of Engineering Prospective Student Checklist

(Or, what do I do and in what order?)

  1. Submit your application to the UNO Admissions Office, Eppley Administration Bldg. (EAB), Rm. 103, 6001 Dodge St., Omaha, NE 68182, Ph. 554-2393.  Pick up a UNO Catalog at Registrar’s Office, EAB, Rm. 105, Ph. 554-2314.  Read sections concerning academic policies of the College of Engineering and the University.  These can also be found by checking the UNO Homepage http://ebruno.unomaha.edu/

  2. Request official high school & college transcripts of ALL previously attended institutions.  These should be mailed directly to the UNO Admissions Office.  These must be received before admission to the University can be finalized.  Further, submit ACT or SAT scores.  These scores are required from all students with fewer than 12 earned semester credit hours of college level course work.

  3. Receive your University Notification of Admission.  Be sure to note any special conditions or provisions relating to your admission.  If you do not receive a notification of admission, contact the UNO Admissions Office, Ph. 554-2393.  (This notification is usually sent within two weeks of the University receiving your Admission application.)

  4. Receive placement testing registration information from the UNO Testing Center in EAB, Rm. 113, Ph. 554-4800.  It is very important to register and take the appropriate placement tests (English, Calculus/Math, Chemistry) well in advance of meeting with your academic advisor.  Some transfer students with previous college credit in these areas may be exempt from these requirements.  (Call if information not received within two weeks of admission.)

General Guidelines For Placement Testing

Who should take the English Placement - Proficiency Exam (EPPE):

Regardless of major, all students entering the College of Engineering, including students transferring from another institution who do not receive transfer credit for ENGL 1160 (English Composition II) should take the EPPE.

Who should take the Chemistry Diagnostic Test (CDT):

All entering engineering majors (except computer and electronics majors) who do not have prior credit for a college level chemistry course should take the CDT.  In addition, any construction management or technology major who intends to enroll in CHEM 1180 (General Chemistry I) but has not completed CHEM 1140 or its equivalent should take the CDT.

Who should take the Calculus Readiness Exam (CRE):

All entering engineering and construction management majors who do not automatically qualify (see Mathematics Placement Guide below) for enrollment in MATH 1950 (Calculus I) or a higher level math course, should take the CRE.  In addition, any technology major who does not automatically qualify for enrollment in MATH 1950 and who wish to enroll in MATH 1950 as their first course in mathematics should take the CRE.

Who should take the Math Placement Exam (MPE):

All entering fire protection technology majors who do not automatically qualify (see Mathematics Placement Guide below) for enrollment in MATH 1320/1330/1340 or a higher level math course should take the MPE.

Mathematics Placement Guide

Students with a “Math” sub-score on an ACT less than five years old will automatically qualify for enrollment in Math courses as follows:

Math ACT score of 26 or higher;       MATH 1950 (Calculus I)
Math ACT score of 25;                    MATH 1930 & MATH 1330 (needs only MATH 1330 to enroll in MATH 1950)
Math ACT score of 23-24;               MATH 1320 & MATH 1330 (or MATH 1340)
Math ACT score of 19-22;               MATH 1310

Note:   Students who have credit for college level math course work less than two years old should contact their academic advisor to determine which, if any, placement test (CRE and/or MPE) they will need to take.

  1. Receive College of Engineering Student Checklist.  If you do not receive this prior to orientation or academic advising, contact the College of Engineering Admissions & Advisement Office, PKI Rm. 100, Ph. 554-6009.  This checklist includes the names and phone numbers of the primary departmental & College contacts.

  2. Receive your enrollment notification called "Need to Know ... Need to Do..."  It will provide essential information about registration and include your Personal Identification Number (PIN), which you will need for registration.  Since this “PIN” does not change, it is important to keep it in a handy, secure place for future registrations.  Retain this “Need to Know ... Need to Do...” mailer as it is only sent once.  Bring this form to Orientation.

  3. Submit your immunization records to UNO.  Visit the UNO Student Health Services website for forms and procedures.

  4. Receive your Calculus/Math Placement Exam, Chemistry Diagnostic Test and English Placement/Proficiency Exam results. Typically, you will receive results of the CRE/MPE and CDT in about one week, and the EPPE in 3 - 4 weeks after taking the placement exams.  If you do not receive results in the indicated time frames, contact the Testing Center in EAB 113, Rm. 113 or Ph. 554-4800.

  5. Receive University Orientation materials. If you do not receive any orientation materials by the time you receive the placement exam results, request a copy of the orientation materials by phoning or stopping by the Orientation Office, EAB 115, Ph. 554-2677.

  6. Make an appointment with your academic advisor. The appointment should be made after you receive the placement exam results.  Dr. Bing Chen, PKI 200A, Ph. 554-2288, is provided as an initial contact for Computer, Electronics, and Pre-Electrical Engineering should your assigned Academic Advisor be unavailable.  If you’re not sure who your Academic Advisor is, contact the College’s Admissions & Advisement Office, Ph. 554-6009.

  7. Prepare for and meet with an academic advisor:
    • Bring a pencil or pen.
    • Bring your "Need to Know ... Need to Do ..." enrollment notification form (with PIN number).
    • Be sure to bring with you all placement exam results.
    • Familiarize yourself with the curriculum (UNO catalog), & schedule of classes (E-BRUNO) for your selected major.
    • Pick up an Academic Advising Form in PKI Room 100 prior to meeting with your advisor.
    • Return the signed advisement form to Room PKI 100 directly after meeting with your advisor.

  8. Register for an Orientation session, EAB 115, 554-2677 (http://www.ses.unomaha.edu/orientation/).  Besides being a University requirement, there are many advantages associated with attending an orientation session.  This includes being permitted to pre-register for classes.

  9. Attend orientation session (554-2677) after seeing your academic advisor.  All new & transfer students are required to attend an orientation session.  You will: register early for classes, obtain your student ID card, tour the UNO campus and receive information about parking and UNO's shuttle service.   Bring:  • Orientation Advising Form (your copy)    • All placement results    • “Need to Know ... Need to Do” form (which has your PIN number).
